Like no other route on Kilimanjaro, Umbwe gives a sense of achievement to those who reach the summit. A short steep climb traversing all the climate zones, experienced climbers seeking adventure and challenge will find just what they want on Umbwe. The adventure through Umbwe is available only as a 6 itinerary, for my recommendation this route is only in good physical shape for trekking.
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) or Arusha Airport, you will be greeted by a representative from Banziadventure who will transfer you to a pre-booked hotel. You will have time to freshen up, shower, and rest before a comprehensive briefing session about the hiking itinerary. This briefing will cover details about the route, proper use of hiking gear, packing instructions for day packs, essential items checklist, and first aid kits.
Your guides and crew will meet you at the hotel and drive you to Umbwe Gate where permits and luggage checks for the crew will be finalized. The day’s hike begins through the rainforest zone towards Umbwe Camp, with the possibility of encountering heavy rain.
Early morning wake-up call with tea, followed by breakfast. Today’s hike leads to Barranco Camp through the Heather and Moorland zone. A hot lunch will be prepared at Barranco Camp, and you’ll have time to rest before dinner.
Early morning wake-up call with tea to prepare for the ascent of the Barranco Wall, approximately 1.5 hours of climbing to an elevation of around 4400 meters a.s.l for acclimatization. Descend into the Karanga Valley/River before ascending to Karanga Camp.
Early morning wake-up call with tea, followed by breakfast. Continue ascending to Barafu Camp. A hot lunch will be provided at Barafu Camp, followed by a detailed briefing about the summit day.
Summit day: Early morning start for the ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Kilimanjaro. After summiting, rest and have lunch at Barafu Camp before descending to Mweka Camp.
