8 - Day Lemosho Route

Overview

The Lemosho route offers excellent acclimatization on Kilimanjaro, making it ideal for older climbers. It features stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, low traffic, and manageable daily distances. The trek takes 7-8 days, with 7 days being the minimum and 8 days recommended for older or special-case climbers.

Day To Day Itinerary

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) or Arusha Airport, you will be greeted by a Banziadventure representative. You will be transferred to your pre-booked hotel, where you will have time to rest and shower. Later, you will receive a full briefing about the Kilimanjaro hike, including details on the Lemosho route, gear usage, packing tips, and a checklist for first aid and medical kits.

After breakfast at the hotel, the guides will drive you to Londorosi Gate at 2,100 meters. After processing permits, you will drive to the starting point of the Lemosho route. You will ascend through a beautiful forest zone, observing various flora and fauna until you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2,750 meters. The 7 km hike takes about 3-4 hours. Dinner and a health check will follow at Mti Mkubwa Camp.

Wake up to a morning call with a cup of coffee or tea before washing and packing your bag. After breakfast, you will start hiking towards Shira I Camp at 3,505 meters. The 8 km hike takes about 4-5 hours. A hot lunch will be provided at Shira I Camp, followed by dinner, a health check, and a briefing.

After a morning call and breakfast, you will hike across the moorland of the Shira Plateau to Shira II Camp at 3,850 meters. The 10 km hike takes about 3-4 hours. You will enjoy panoramic views and a hot lunch at Shira II Camp, followed by dinner and a health check.

This is a critical acclimatization day. After breakfast, you will hike to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, covering 7 km in about 4 hours. After a possible hot lunch at Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters, covering 3 km in about 2 hours. Dinner and a health check will follow at Barranco Camp.

  • Elevation: 4,600 meters a.s.l. (Lava Tower), 3,950 meters a.s.l. (Barranco Camp)
  • Hiking Distance: 7 km (ascending to Lava Tower), 3 km (descending to Barranco Camp)
  • Hiking Time: 4 hours (ascending), 2 hours (descending)
  • Total Hiking Distance: 10 km
  • Total Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
  • Flora and Fauna: Lobelia deckenii, giant senecios, white-necked ravens, sunbirds, robin chats, four-striped mice.
  • Accommodation: Sleeping tents with comfortable mattresses, mess tents, chairs and tables, candle lights, and solar lights.

After a morning call and breakfast, you will climb the Barranco Wall, which takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the top at approximately 4,400 meters. After a rest and photo session, you will descend to Karanga Valley and then ascend to Karanga Camp at 3,995 meters. The 6 km hike takes about 3-4 hours. After a hot lunch and rest, the day concludes with dinner and a health check.

The morning routine starts with a cup of tea. After breakfast, you will ascend to Barafu Camp at 4,673 meters. The 4 km hike takes about 3-4 hours. After a hot lunch, you will receive a detailed briefing about the summit day. The focus will be on maintaining a positive mindset to achieve your goal of reaching Uhuru Peak.

This challenging day begins at midnight. You will ascend to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) over 7-8 hours, covering 5 km in the arctic zone. After celebrating at the summit, you will descend to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters), a 12 km trek taking 4-6 hours. You will have time to rest and enjoy a hot lunch before continuing the descent.

  • Elevation: 5,895 meters a.s.l. (Uhuru Peak), 3,100 meters a.s.l. (Mweka Camp)
  • Hiking Distance: 5 km (ascending), 12 km (descending)
  • Hiking Time: 7-8 hours (ascending), 4-6 hours (descending)
  • Flora and Fauna: None at Uhuru Peak, white-necked ravens at lower elevations.
  • Accommodation: Sleeping tents with comfortable mattresses, mess tents, chairs and tables, candle lights, and solar lights.

After breakfast, you will share your experiences with the team and give tips to show appreciation. The final 10 km descent to Mweka Gate takes about 3-4 hours. Here, you will receive your Golden Certificate and be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a celebratory hot shower and drinks.
